The National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts and Culture is proud to present Los Reyes Magos Puertorriqueños / The Wise Kings of Puerto Rico, an exhibit that brings to life the history, artistry, and cultural significance of Three Kings Day (El Día de Reyes)—a cherished holiday deeply rooted in Puerto Rican tradition.

Learn how Puerto Rican adaptations of this story reflect the island’s diverse heritage and celebrate themes of family, faith, and community.
The Artistry of the Santos de Palo
Central to the exhibit are the Santos de Palo—intricately carved wooden figures of the Three Kings created by master artisans called Santeros. These carvings, vibrant in detail and creativity, highlight Puerto Rico’s Indigenous, African, and European influences. Discover how Santeros used their craft to create religious figures while embedding cultural pride and resilience, particularly for enslaved Africans who saw themselves represented in King Melchor, the Black King.
A Unique Puerto Rican Tradition
Unlike the biblical Magi who rode camels, the Puerto Rican Three Kings ride Paso Fino horses—descendants of Spanish breeds introduced during colonization. These majestic horses, renowned for their smooth gait and cultural significance, symbolize the blending of the biblical story with Puerto Rican heritage.
The Fourth King: A Story of Compassion
The legend of Artaban, the “Fourth King,” is also featured. His story of service and kindness reflects the everyday heroes of Puerto Rican communities who embody the spirit of solidarity and giving. Artaban’s humble depiction reminds us that the true gifts of the season are acts of compassion.
