Antonio Martorell was born in 1939 in Santurce, Puerto Rico. He studied art in Madrid and with Lorenzo Homar at the Taller de Gráfica of the Instituto de Cultura Puertorriqueña. In 1967 he founded the Taller Alacrán as a polemical vehicle that could respond to political and social issues, as well as a means of distributing posters to a broader audience by having them for sale. In 1978. Martorell moved to Mexico for 7 years, working as a printmaker, illustrator, and television producer, but continued to design posters in Puerto Rico, but more on cultural themes rather than political ones. He is well known as a painter, book designer, set designer, and installation artist. Currently he is artist in residence at the University of Puerto Rico at Cayey.
