Speaking Their Language: A Guide to Museums, Curators, and Public Art Policy invites artists behind the curtain of how institutions actually operate. Led by Janice Bond, Executive Director of Chicago Public Art Group, this hands-on session demystifies the systems artists are expected to navigate but rarely get taught: exhibition planning, contracts, curatorial versus administrative decision-making, and the policy frameworks shaping public art today.
Drawing on decades of institutional and advisory experience, Bond breaks down what museums and public art organizations actually look for, how to build lasting relationships with curators and administrators, and how emerging tools like immersive technology are reshaping public art’s future. The session also covers practical essentials: budgeting, contracts, funder relationships, and the real differences between museums, galleries, and public art institutions.
Through interactive discussion and real-world case studies from CPAG’s own projects, participants leave with concrete tools for approaching institutions with clarity, professionalism, and confidence, and a shared vocabulary for speaking their language.
