Spanish Matters / ¡El Español Importa!

Saturday, September 21, 2024

¡Spanish Matters/El Español Importa! Join us for a fun and interactive event to celebrate the beauty and importance of the Spanish language. We welcome native speakers, beginners, and everyone interested in learning about how to keep Spanish active in your families and communities. Network with schools and daycares, bookstores and libraries, cultural groups, families, and other language enthusiasts. There will be a book presentation and Q&A with Professors Lourdes Torres (De Paul University) and Kim Potowski (University of Illinois at Chicago), authors of Spanish in Chicago. ¡Nos vemos pronto!

Talk with Spanish-language daycare providers, librarians, language schools, bookstores, musical groups for children, and more!

Did you know Spanish is the 2nd most common native language in the world after Chinese and before English!

Join us to learn how you can keep Spanish strong in your family and community.

MYTH VS. TRUTH

MYTH: Kids get confused when you speak to them in two languages.

TRUTH: 60% of people in the world are bilingual and it has many cognitive and social benefits

MYTH: Bilingual education is bad for students’ English and their academic achievement.

TRUTH: Students in bilingual programs develop stronger English and Spanish and also score better on tests
