Artist Talk with Nitza Tufiño
Legacy, Printmaking & The Living Archive of Puerto Rican Art
Join us at the National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts and Culture for a powerful and intimate artist talk with Nitza Tufiño, one of Puerto Rico’s most distinguished contemporary printmakers and cultural stewards.
In this one-hour presentation, Nitza will introduce her artistic practice and reflect deeply on the profound influence of her father, master printmaker Rafael Tufiño. Through rarely shared photographs, preparatory drawings, and archival materials, she will guide us into the creative process behind her father’s iconic El Café Portafolio (1953-54), revealing the studies, sketches, and visual research that shaped this landmark body of work. This rare portfolio is part of the museum’s collection and is currently on display.
Following the talk, Nitza will offer a guided tour of three exhibitions currently on view, including:
- The historic El Café Portafolio (1953-54)
- The powerful silkscreen posters from the Primer Centenario de la Abolición de la Esclavitud portfolio
- The Disporal Collage exhibition, featuring her work “Tenderete.”
Together, these exhibitions create a dialogue across generations — from the island to the diaspora — exploring abolition, labor, migration, celebration, and cultural resilience.
This program offers a rare opportunity to experience Puerto Rican art history through the eyes of an artist who both witnessed and shaped it.
We look forward to welcoming you for an afternoon of storytelling, archival insight, and intergenerational artistic dialogue.
