In places like Puerto Rico, Cuba, and Jamaica, there are historical records, family stories, and regional traditions that point to Indigenous survival and their rich cultural legacies within and outside of the Caribbean. Today, an increasing number of Caribbean people are calling themselves Taíno as part of a growing movement across countries that declares: “We are still here.”

In this image, BlackFeather, a Taíno of Puerto Rican descent holds up a sign at the 2011 Occupy Columbus protest in New York that declares Taíno vive (“Taíno live on”) in front of a statue of Christopher Columbus.

The National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts and Culture will host “Caribbean Indigenous Resistance / Resistencia indígena del Caribe ¡Taíno Vive!” January 6 – June 16, 2024. The exhibition from the Smithsonian presents the history of the Taínos, the Indigenous peoples of the northern Caribbean islands, and how their descendants are reaffirming their culture and identity today. The bilingual (English/Spanish) exhibition was organized for travel by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES) in collaboration with the National Museum of the American Indian and the National Museum of the American Latino. The collaborative exhibit at the National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts and Culture has been enhanced through a partnership with the Field Museum of Chicago. This collaboration aims to showcase twenty-one Taíno artifacts from the distinguished collection of the Field Museum, providing an opportunity for visitors to learn and appreciate these cultural treasures.
